Buying guide
Active copper and AEC from TIFNEX
At 400G and 800G, passive copper reach drops to around 2m to 3m. Active copper cables (ACC) and active electrical cables (AEC) add signal conditioning in the connector to extend copper links to 5m or 7m, keeping the low cost and low power of copper for whole-rack and adjacent-rack links.
TIFNEX supplies QSFP-DD, OSFP, OSFP224, QSFP112 and SFP28/SFP56 active cables coded for NVIDIA, Cisco, Arista, Juniper and Dell. For longer runs, use AOC cables.
Common questions
What is an AEC cable?
An active electrical cable has a retimer chip in each connector that cleans up the signal, allowing copper links of up to about 7m at 400G and 800G.
Do AEC cables use more power than DAC?
Yes, a few watts per end, but still much less than a pair of optical transceivers.
When should I choose AEC over AOC?
For links of 3m to 7m, AEC is usually cheaper and more robust. Beyond 7m, use AOC.
